Rosalyn Yake - Starfish Scholarships India

Rosalyn Yake

Rosalyn Yake founded Starfish Scholarships in 2009 after winning $10,000 in a national video contest. She holds a B.A in journalism from Ryerson University and an M.A in Indigenous Studies from Trent University. She has worked for CBC radio in Quebec City, and her writing has been published in the Toronto Star online, This Magazine, The Toronto Quarterly, and Metro Newspaper. She currently works for the Ontario Public Service.

Rosalyn is passionate about working with young people. Her career has included positions with the International Institute for Child Rights and Development based in Vancouver, the Glocal Forum in Rome, Italy, and Havergal College in Toronto. She completed her Gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh leadership program, and attended the International Gold Event in Hong Kong and China in 2005. She has also served as a member of the Youth Advisory Group for the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.

Anne Kneale - Starfish Scholarships India

Anne Kneale

Anne Kneale is a Gold Award achiever of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. For her third year of Mechanical Engineering at Queen's University, Anne studied abroad in India, during which time she helped establish Starfish Scholarships. Anne is currently studying Medicine at Western University in London, Ontario, and will graduate with an MD in 2015. As a certified yoga teacher, she is running yoga classes this year to help fundraise for Starfish Scholarships.

Helen Kneale - Starfish Scholarships India

Helen Kneale

Helen Kneale is a Gold Award achiever of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. She received her Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award in 2004 and kept active with the Award programme throughout her undergraduate degree at Queen's University, where she was the President of the Queen's DEA club and helped organize a DEA interuniversity conference in Orillia. She has worked as a bilingual Canadian tour guide in the Parliamentary buildings and at the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy, France.

After completing her Master's in International Relations at the Université de Strasbourg in Alsace, France, Helen worked for UNICEF in the Palestinian refugee camps of Lebanon. She later worked as a Cabin Crew member for Etihad Airways based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Helen is currently a Law student at McGill University in Montréal.

Stephanie Silliker - Starfish Scholarships India

Stephanie Silliker

Stephanie is a graduate of Ryerson University's journalism program, has studied on exchange at the Danish School of Journalism in Aarhus, Denmark and worked as an English language teacher in South Korea. After graduating from Teacher's College in 2008 she began teaching media studies and English at Pope John Paul II Catholic Secondary School in Scarborough. In 2009, she received the TCDSB Exemplary Practice Award for initiating a project in her grade nine English class that raised awareness about youth homelessness in Scarborough.

She created and implemented the inaugural Tom Finder Social Justice Award, which recognizes PJPII students who are advocates of social justice in their community and abroad. In 2010, she traveled with PJPII students to the Cuernavaca Center for Intercultural Dialogue on Development in Mexico, a social justice center where participants engage in cross cultural experiences and social analysis. While teaching, Stephanie continues to pursue freelance journalistic projects.

Rahul Shankar - Starfish Scholarships India

Rahul Shankar

Rahul is currently employed at Tata Consultancy Services, Chennai. He completed a Bachelor's degree in Engineering at Anna University, Chennai. Rahul has completed his bronze, silver and gold award of the International Award for Young People (The Duke of Edinburgh's Award) and received his Gold Award from the Hon'ble Vice President of India in May 2008. He represented India at the International Gold Event held at Mauritius on October 2008. He co-ordinates the Olcott Memorial School Project, a special Project of the IAYP, which aims at providing the opportunity of giving the Award to children of domestic workers and fisher folk in Chennai.

In July 2009, Rahul was chosen as the Regional Intern for the major initiative of the Award - The Peter Cruddas Social Innovation Initiative. The internship dealt with identifying stories of young people making a difference and creating social change through the Award programme. He was one of the 21 youth delegates invited to the International Award Forum in Sydney, where he was a part of the expert panel for the 'Social Innovation' workshop.

Caitlyn Hui - Starfish Scholarships India

Caitlyn Hui

Caitlyn Hui is a silver award holder of the Duke of Edinburgh's program, and is currently completing a Bachelor of Science at McGill University, with a major in Microbiology & Immunology and a minor in English. Prior to McGill, Caitlyn completed her high-school education at Havergal College in Toronto, where she first became involved with Starfish Scholarships.

Caitlyn has always had a strong desire to be involved with her community, whether it is at home or internationally. Through the Duke of Edinburgh program, Caitlyn has become involved with various initiatives focused around children and education, recognizing the importance it plays in creating equal opportunities. She is excited to be a part of the Starfish Scholarships team and to continue making a positive change in the lives of other children.

Cindy Ma - Starfish Scholarships India

Cindy Ma

Cindy Ma is a Gold Award achiever of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Toronto. She started her involvement with Starfish Scholarships as a volunteer, helping out by writing content for the website and organizing fundraisers. In Cindy's free time, she likes to weightlift, play in an orchestra, and teach piano.
